John Pluchinsky: January 8, 2003 - July 18, 2007

On July 18, 2007, our son John Albert Pluchinsky drowned while attending Space Week day camp at the Houston Racquet Club in Houston, Texas. He drowned in a clear- water pool within plain sight of two lifeguards and six counselors with a ratio of almost 1 counselor for every 2 campers. The prevailing question following his death has been, “How could this have happened?”

This website attempts to answer the question as to how this tragedy happened by exploring the failures of those responsible for safety at every level of the club. More importantly, our website is intended to help educate the people that we, as parents, entrust our children to every day.

It is our wish that those responsible for water safety, from the club managers and camp directors to the individual counselors and lifeguards, can learn the lessons we have from the death of our son and take adequate safety precautions. It is our sincere hope that another family does not have to endure the lifelong pain of losing a child due to an easily preventable death.
